I realize I really like updos, especially when you got a lot of hair and you have this big ol bun and some fun funky bangs to go with it. Beyonce and her updo hairstyle (sans bangs) in her recent visit to Cuba oddly comes to mind right now (pic courtesy of abcnews.go.com)
(love her!) In any case, I try to avoid always pulling my hair back in a bun, ponytail, top knot etc because of the tension it causes on the baby hairs around my forehead. Ever wonder why women sometimes have that receding hair line in the forehead area? Sometimes it can be from Traction Alopecia (wearing weaves, braid extensions and whatnot) and always pulling the hair back into some sort of tight hairstyle - and this applies to women of all skin colors and hair types. I find I have two baldy spots that were developing on the right and left temples of my hair probably because I always wore my hair in a 'I-don't-care-bun' in high school. I also have very fragile and fine hair that breaks easily
I try to wear my hair down as much as possible but when I wanna get it all out of my face and wear some dangly, big earrings I really like doing updos, usually with some day old wash n' go hair or a couple of days after a twist out/braid out (I find it works better with a braid out because I have a little bit more volume).
Sorry the photos I took did not provide a lot of detail in how I did the updo (probably because my hair is a dark color AND I need to start taking photos of myself from the back of my iphone not the front lol). But I basically left a 1/3 of my hair out on the top portion of my head and put the 2/3 left in the back in a high top bun with a simple elastic band. Then I folded back the hair left out on the front of my head into a poof type of bang and secured it with one or two pins. Really quick, simple and easy. I even accessorized a little further and added a scarf because I was going to the beach.
